Sangria jug – Olé

In the summer of 2021, I participated in the DriebergenART art route. DriebergenART is an annual art event focusing on an inspiring partnership between entrepreneurs and artists. The various artists create a piece of work especially for this event, which is exhibited in the window/shop of a Driebergen entrepreneur. I exhibited at Gildeslager Marlet. The theme was ‘Spain’ in connection with the start of the Vuelta in Utrecht, which unfortunately did not go ahead due to Corona.

Olé is the title and everyone has heard or used this Spanish cry of joy. The work is a sangriakan. I chose this because ‘sangre’ is Spanish for blood and refers to the colour of sangria. Blood makes the link to the butcher’s shop where I exhibited this work and I chose to exhibit in the butcher’s shop because I am a butcher’s daughter. The glaze is bright yellow and represents the Spaase sun, the hot summers (i really love!). On the belly, I incorporated the various ingredients of sangria. The dots on and in the jug represent the dotted Spanish dresses and shoes worn at Flamenco. I also let the Flamenco return in the foot and spout; these danced on my turntable.
